Weight loss is a MUST for one and all if you are actually looking forward to live long and live disease-free. Because whether gradual or abrupt, there could be various underlying health conditions and even those tiny little activities which often go unnoticed but play a significant role in making us gain some unwanted weight.

Reasons Could Be Many

However, some of the major and the most usual ones could be causing unnecessary weight gain. When you are gaining weight and when it is going over and above the normal limits, in this case it definitely relates to consumption of more calories than you can burn. And an overall sedentary and inactive lifestyle could be a reason for this.

Although there could be more causes like –

  • Hormonal imbalance,
  • Genetic history,
  • Vitamin deficiency,
  • Depression,
  • Side effects of medication,
  • Fluid retention
  • Environmental, emotional and cultural factors.

Other than the above, early – ageing is also often responsible behind those increasing pounds on our body, owing largely to a relative loss of muscle mass as the body ages, as well as reduced physical activity.

What Health Issues Could Crop-Up!

Whatever might be the cause, we must realize that there are a number of health problems which are a direct or an indirect result of an increased weight. Let’s have a look at how weight gain affects us and how the excess weight could leads to these:

Diabetes

When a person is obese or overweight, his / her chances of suffering from type II diabetes increases manifold. And this makes it even more difficult to maintain the normal blood glucose levels. There is a reason for this.

  • If you would be suffering from type II diabetes, the blood glucose tends to rise beyond what is normal.
  • In this case, controlling this becomes rather tricky other than opting strictly to means of  weight loss and regular exercising.

Please note that the relationship between obesity and diabetes is, in fact, two-way. Therefore, if you are a diabetic and not quite overweight, it becomes especially important for you to manage your pounds.

Hypertension Or High Blood Pressure

It has been observed that most of the individuals suffering from hypertension also happen to be overweight. Hypertension or high blood pressure, often referred to as ‘The Silent Killer’ may not itself cause any harm. But the chances of suffering from problems such as heart attack or a heart stroke increase significantly owing to hypertension.

Cancer

A number of studies conducted in the recent past indicate that cancer might have something to do with weight gain. In fact, in the United States alone, about five to seven percent of those suffering from cancer are fairly overweight or obese.

Various symptoms often observed among overweight and obese people have chances of leading to cancer. These are –

  • Chronic swelling and inflammation,
  • Increased levels of insulin as well as the insulin growth factor

Osteoarthritis And Joint Pains

There is no denying the fact that our body weight directly affects our bones. This holds especially true in case of women. Please understand why it is so?

  • As the women age and reach late forties, their body experiences a significant drop in the production of oestrogen.
  • This leads to an increased fat mass along with a gradual loss of bone mass.
  • And being overweight or obese only adds to the problem.
  • Owing to this, their chances of suffering from joint problems and symptoms of osteoporosis increase significantly.

Respiratory Complications

A body weight that is beyond the healthy range could also lead to several respiratory as well as heart problems. Excess fat on your belly has been known to seriously affect the lung function. There are various respiratory issues which can be brought about or worsened by obesity.

These include –

  • Asthma
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Obesity-hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)

Heart Problem

On the other hand, when it comes to the health of our heart, the problem of obesity can seriously affect it. An increased weight leads to a number of heart health issues like –

  • High blood pressure
  • Increased cholesterol
  • High blood lipids
  • Diabetes
  • These health ailments can directly affect our heart function and lead to various cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, failure or even a stroke.

Little Choice Is There

We need to understand that the weight gain has developed as a pronounced delinquent condition especially when health and wellness is concerned. While some of us gain weight gradually over a period of time, others might just gain pounds suddenly and without quite realizing the reason behind the same.

Now Is The Time

It’s therefore high time we recognize that these health conditions, once discovered, are rather difficult and challenging to treat, and therefore, their prevention in the first place is always a better idea. The greatest wealth of our lives is health, and managing weight equals managing our overall health.
