With fitness consciousness kicking in nationwide, more and more people are starting to realize how fitness is no longer a luxury like it once was, but rather a need to combat lifestyle diseases. They are ready to shell out hard-earned money to achieve their fitness goals by getting into the best programs and training at the best gyms.

Personal Training has also come a long way from just being sought after by celebs to now being hired by stay-at-home moms and working professionals alike. People who have been training under personal trainers know exactly what a huge difference it is from just training on their own. But what are the myths surrounding personal training that are putting people off?

Let’s take a look at the most common Personal training myths and debunk them with solid facts!


Fact: Just because you found one bad apple doesn’t mean you should give up on the whole tree. Bogus trainers come and go, but the number of genuine professionals is also growing day by day. Find out if they’re certified and what credibility their certifications holds. The most trustworthy trainers are those whose certifications are accredited by NCCA(National Commission for Certifying Agencies) like the ACE(American Council on Exercise) and ACSM(American College of Sports Medicine), ISCA(International Sports Conditioning Association), GFFI(Growth for Fitness Instructors), Reebok, Nike, and fitness clubs like Gold’s Gym. Your personal trainer is your choice; make sure he/she is the right one.


Fact: It’s true that hiring a personal trainer is going to cost little more than you spend at gym, but don’t you think you are reaping the benefits of it in a much better way? While hiring any professional is always going to cost you, the loss incurred because of not having one might cost you more. When it comes to workouts, injuries and accidents because of lack of supervision and guidance on the correct form and technique is far more of a loss than the money you spend on a good coach. What say?


Fact: You may have seen coaches yelling at their trainees to keep pushing through to complete the workout although the latter barely seem able to keep going. Although it may seem like the trainer is only asking for pain, but it is not their actual goal. Pain and soreness mean there is muscle damage which is detrimental for muscle growth. Good trainers observe your soreness because it communicates to them how your body’s recovery mechanism works and how best to work with what you’ve got to achieve your best, not theirs.


Fact: Neither is every trainer a Jillian Michaels nor every training session ought to be a rip off of The Biggest Loser episode. While some people need a trainer with an aggressive personality to push them through rep after rep, some perform better under the gentle push of a calm coach, often one who has a way with words. Here’s where that prior screening pays off. You need to be with a trainer who can bring the best out of you, not the worst.


Fact: There’s no denying that athletes and professional bodybuilders need personal trainers to help them stay in shape and avoid injuries as they prepare for events after events. However, the goals of gaining strength, staying fit, eating healthy and looking good apply to us and our everyday lives as well. And because not everyone is an expert of the human anatomy, hiring an expert trainer is an investment towards a fitter and healthier life.
