since 2006.In town after their win, the kabbadi girls – captain Tejaswini Bai V and teammate Mamta Poojari – both Arjuna Awardees – tell TOI why they should be treated on par with other medal winners. She is from Bangalore and when she was in the VIII standard when the kabbadi bug bit me. But she  was always inclined towards sports. One day, there was a match going on and as she  remember finding the way through the crowd and going right ahead to watch it. And it was so much fun. I loved the fact that all the players were actually enjoying and having fun together. Bai took up the sport and soon, I began playing for school, then college, then district and then,  got an offer from the Indian Railways. It nice that we have a job, because we players are always busy with our games and don’t really have the time for a proper job. That way, railway job has been really helpful. Tejaswini  the national captain  and Mamtha, who were accompanied by coach Neeta Dadwe, were received at the airport by several officials from the Telangana Kabaddi Association, Olympic Association and the Sports Authority of Telangana State.

Even before arriving in South Korea, the entire Indian contingent was counting on two gold medals from “our very own sport” kabaddi. the men and women squads did the country proud by defending their titles. Iran were at the receiving end in both finals. And with 11 gold medals, nine silver and 37 bronze, India brought the curtain down on their campaign at the 17th Asian Games. It was said by bai in one interview  “ I must admit that I’m lucky enough to have been honoured with a Arjuna Award. I think it was a bit early as I was not expecting that to happen. After all a lot of athletes work tirelessly for it,” said Bai, who was part of the gold medal winning team at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year, at a felicitation ceremony by her employers Railways.
