Major D.P Singh: India’s First Blade Runner

Blog by: Raj Kishan

Declared dead! If you think you have problems and are giving up on them slowly and relatively easily, you most definitely want to hear Major Singh’s tale first. He was “declared dead” at a point, and literally defeated death to come out like blazing fire!

If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon. That’s how Major Singh turned his life into a whole new frame.

Major Devender Pal Singh, born on 13 September 1973, in Jagadhari, India, is a retired officer of the Indian Army. He is a Kargil War veteran. On July 15, 1999, the young major was grievously injured in Kargil during Operation Vijay. Surgeons at that time declared him dead in the army hospital but fortunately later managed to save him after amputating his leg. He literally came back from dead and became inspiration. He gradually started running using a prosthetic limb, and now has run over 18 different marathons in his running career; he is famously known as India’s First Blade Runner.

“We were 80 meters away from the enemy post. A 48-hour lull at that time, without a single bullet being fired, was slightly unnerving. When the conflict scene is hot and nothing happens, you have a feeling that something bad is about to happen. There was a sense of foreboding which precedes a tragedy. The killing area of a bomb is in an eight-meter diameter. Today I can joke that the bomb had my name written on it but it couldn’t still kill me. Jaako raakhe saiyan, mar sake na koye,” Major Singh has bravely told about his tragedy on his website. In the long run, the sharpest weapon of all is a kind and gentle spirit. Spirit does not get stronger than this!

The training regime is tough! Very tough! It takes him over two hours just to get ready and wear the prosthesis, so he to start training at 5a.m he wakes up at 3a.m. Initially he used to just hop on his good leg and used to drag the prosthetic leg. After months of practice, he could hop-run for over 5 kilometers. “Sweating out like this after so long elated me. Although it was slow going, but I managed to run two half marathons like this,” he said. The remarkable part about the runs was that Singh continuously improved his timing by 15 minutes in each attempt.

Singh got to know about the fibre blade prosthetic from South African blade runner Oscar Pistorius. He has entered the Limca book of records for being the first Indian to run a half marathon with a blade. The Limca Book of Records added his name to their “People of the Year 2016” list.

Major Singh who graduated from the Indian Military Academy (101st course, Regular batch) on 6 December 1997 was commissioned into the 7th Battalion,The Dogra Regiment. Because of the injury, in 2002, he converted to Army Ordnance Corps and later retired from the Indian Army after serving for 10 years in 2007, after serving for 10 years.  He still thanks his Army days and Army comrades for all he is.

“Someone asked me, have you ever been hurt at heart. I said, don’t you see me laughing all the time?” So laugh my friends and carry on!

India vs USA, FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2017: India lose 0-3 against USA in debut matcha

Blog by: Suryakant Tripathi

India showed heart but lacked in skill and quality with a much superior United States of America handing them a sound 3-0 thrashing in the opening encounter of the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Friday.

Playing in their maiden FIFA tournament, rank outsiders India were outclassed by a side that was a few notches above the ‘Boys in Blue’ physically as well as technically. Captain and star striker Josh Sargent gave US the lead in the 30th minute through a penalty before Chris Dunkin (51st) got a freak goal and Andrew Carleton (84th) hit on the counter after the change of ends.

But for fine anticipatory skills of goalkeeper Moirangthem Deeraj Singh, who made some impressive saves, India could have conceded even more goals. As predicted by head coach Luis Norton de Matos, US made a wave attacks throughout the match and India were left to defend their citadel for the better part of the game. While the USA got several chances, India had only had a couple of clear look at the goal.

Midfielder Komal Thatal, the best Indian in sight today, wasted a chance in the second half when his lob was off target while Anwar Ali’s rasping shot in the 83rd minute hit the horizontal. The sizeable crowd at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium cheered the home players, who became the first ever national team to play in a FIFA World Cup at any level, but the gulf in the class was clearly evident.

The accuracy in passes, the first touch, positional sense of the US players made it clear that it was always a catching up game for the Indian boys. India were pushed back in their own half most of the time in the face of incessant US attack. The US attacking trio of Sargent, Tim Weah and Ayo Akinola kept the Indian defence on tenterhooks.

INDIA VS WEST INDIES 5TH ODI: VIRAT KOHLI’S RECORD-BREAKING TON HELPS VISITORS WIN BY 8-WICKETS

blog by riya rathore

Ajinkya Rahane is the Man of the Series for his 336 runs off 5 innings I really want to make it count, and even in the Champions Trophy I had been batting well in the nets. The wicket was slightly better here compared to the previous games. The ball was coming on nicely, and this was the best wicket to bat. I was just trying to enjoy my batting. ODI cricket is all about enjoying your batting and go at your own pace. Whenever I go onto bat, I always look to give my best and even in the future I want to enjoy myself. First and foremost, the aim was to win the series. Some special performance from the boys and special mention to Rahane who has been consistent throughout the series. Today was another clinical performance from us. For me it is all about the target. Two failures in the last 2 games, I never look at stats and numbers. I feel chase is more comfortable. Taking control of the situations. Dinesh was outstanding. Partnership helps, communication helps. If you carry a squad of 15-16 it is important to believe in them. As I mentioned Kuldeep was outstanding, Shami was playing after 2 years. Always been a batsmen who has played to the situation. Still love to finish the game and ya right now I am taking extra responsibility and something you learn. I am relishing the opportunity. ort of a length delivery from Umesh, down leg, Hope gets enough bat on it to help it to fine leg boundary.A inkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli(c), Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni(wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami. A warm welcome to the fifth and final ODI between West Indies and India from Jamaica. Jason Holder’s side are alive in the series after a 11-run win in Antigua. Can they spectacularly level the series? After the first ODI was washed out, India played well to comprehensively won the second and third ODIs. They were well on their way to clinch the fourth game too when the West Indies staged a comeback late in the game to push the series into the last game.
