BFY student : Chhavi Malik

Blog by : Kriti Bhardwaj

Life is what you make of it, and Ms. Chhavi Malik proves to be following this mantra very well. Having a streak for fitness, this 50 year old lady is a runner. She runs in marathons and half marathons. She likes to be fit and was constantly doing gym. After having done hum for a long period of time she thought why not have a good knowledge about it too! “I thought first I should have knowledge and then train as not many good trainers are available in every gym, so I thought first to know myself and increase my knowledge first and then learn to train.” She came to know about BFY sports online through advertisements and did the BFY/PT certification from there.
Currently she is not working and just enjoying life on her own terms and frequently runs in half marathons. She said that she thought when her children would grow up she would have a backup. She thought of it a plan B for her interests in the future and keeps it for the later on. She said that she basically did the course for certification and may go for another one in the near future. ” I’m enjoying my life these days by running and staying fit because that’s what life is actually for!”
When asked about her future plans she said that for 2-3 years there won’t be any change in the schedule but later on she will pursue the BFY-ACE and will do other advanced courses so that down the lane she can open her own gym!
She says that people should always have a look up for how they want to lead their life and tend to stay fit because that’s what will help them in their long run of life. She advises that fitness is not a shortcut but it is a long process, it takes time and efforts. She feels that fitness is a way of lifestyle because a healthy lifestyle leads to a happier life. She says that one should eat healthy because fitness is not a short term goal, one should denote time to what the body of a person demands. For the newcomers she advices that it’s good to have knowledge of your own body, they should try to find what suits them the best because anyone and everyone has a different body and have different needs.

Samir Kapoor’s love for adventure sports, exercise and fitness-related activities came to a grinding halt once he started his professional life. His corporate job got to him and his visits to the gym came to a standstill. It was almost eight years before Kapoor decided to hit the gym again. He was surprised that in all this time, there was little that had changed in the way gyms operated. What amazed him was that gyms around him hadn’t changed a bit. Soon the old craze for fitness began to take hold on him again and, this time, he did not let his job come in the way.

Launched in July 2015, MultiFit Wellness Private Limited is India’s Fastest Growing Functional Fitness Studio brand. Driven by its highly qualified and experienced trainers, MultiFit delivers a unique brand of functional fitness aimed at creating the perfect balance between Mind-Body-Soul, through its proprietary ‘iFit’ model of functional fitness. It aims to make fitness a lifestyle choice, by making the workout both enjoyable and effective, for every individual they engage.

A perfect antidote to boring gyms, Multifit is focused on cross Functional Training, a methodology which involves training the body for cardio and fitness using activities performed in daily life. People who have tried it have found it addictive, as they are able to see results without hating their workouts. The core idea is to cut out the entire monotony from the session to make it as enticing as your favourite sport.

Based on the belief that fitness should extend beyond dumbbells and machines, Multi-Fit does not rely on traditional equipment and fitness routines. Instead, it offers Yoga, boxing, mixed martial arts, triathlon training, and a host of other workout options. The functional training looks at ‘movements’ more than ‘exercise’. The regimes at MultiFit involve intense functional interval training. MultiFit also focuses on calisthenics—the practice of using one’s own body weight for exercise.

Their specialty, tailored classes to individual requirements, targets all the aspects of your fitness needs. On the other hand,  group sessions not only keep you motivated and help you achieve your goals but also make fitness fun. They offer a complete holistic approach to fitness, that targets all the different aspects of fitness like strength, stamina, endurance, flexibility, agility, speed and power, and is undoubtedly, the best way to experience fitness.

The startup seeks to challenge the conventional gym imagery by abandoning traditional equipment and focuses on the use of simple tools like ropes and tires to help improve one’s well-being and performance in everyday activities. Work out sessions are also conducted outdoors. MultiFit’s open air, ‘Palaeolithic’ workouts, involve things like chopping wood with an axe, drawing water from a well, etc. Boot camps are organized in the countryside, entailing 48 hours of rigorous exercise—cycling, swimming, trekking.

With the incredible support and response from our patrons, Multifit now has 12 operational studios across Pune, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Gurgaon. In March 2017, three more Multifit studios are slated for launch across Kothrud, Senapati Bapat Road, and Satara Road and five more signed Multifit studios are slated for launch through April – May 2017 across Mumbai, Jaipur, and Pune, taking the total count to 16 functional fitness studios across 4 cities. By end 2017, Multifit is targeting 30 functional fitness studios across India, including one in Manchester, UK.

MultiFit ‘iFit’, is a model based on extensive practical training experience of its core team. It is designed to integrate science and fitness training in a manner that helps bring you closer to attaining the perfect Mind-Body-Soul balance making your workout more enjoyable and effective. Thus, while on the one end iFit is based on the immensely popular HIIT Training which gets & keeps your heart rate up & burns more fat in less time, it also includes Yoga, Endurance and other forms of fitness training to holistically cater to your mind and body’s varied fitness need.

Have you thought of going to the gym but been dissuaded by the high membership fees, lack of exercise options at the neighbourhood gym, inflexible timings, etc. Well, you can bid goodbye to all such worries courtesy Akshay and Arushi Verma. The siblings have started a new startup called FITPASS. The Vermas founded FITPASS in June 2015, a company aimed at making going to the gym economical and convenient. Operations for FITPASS started in January 2016. FITPASS offers plans that allow members the freedom to work out when they want, where they want and how they want, aided by a partner network of 1,250-plus gyms and fitness studios in Delhi NCR.

The startup, which has a staff strength of 22, generated Rs 1 crore in revenue in 2016. It is currently clocking Rs 10 lakh a month and is seeing a 30% month-on-month growth in revenue. It has 6,500 active members on board and more than 50,000 people have downloaded the FITPASS smartphone app. When FITPASS was founded, building the technology to solve the market inefficiencies—high upfront annual fee, lack of gym options, etc, and getting fitness studios and gyms on board the platform were its biggest challenges.

Prominent gym chains that are part of the FITPASS network include Gold’s Gym, Snap Fitness, and Reebok Crossfit. An extensive network allows FITPASS members the choice to workout near their home, office, the neighbourhood market, etc., at their convenience, and at significantly lower costs. The startup began by offering monthly plans for Rs 2,499, and are currently offer quarterly plans for the same amount. The monthly plan now costs Rs 999. Fitness routines that members have access to range from yoga, Zumba, pilates, and aerobics to kickboxing and Martial Arts.

Training the staff at fitness centres that did partner in the use the startup’s proprietary technology was another tough task to execute. A strong team according to Akshay, helped the company get past these hurdles. The company’s technology, partner, and customer teams have worked hard to introduce the concept to our partners and customers, as well as educate and orient partners with the technological process. Started with an investment of Rs 20 lakh, put in by the co-founders, FITPASS raised Rs 6.7 crore in seed funding from Mumbai angels and a consortium of Delhi and Bengaluru-based angel investors in December 2016. The funds will be used to expand the company’s presence in South India, starting with Bengaluru. The company also plan to expand their bouquet of offerings with the launch of new verticals, and have just come out with a nutrition service for their customers.

Initially, convincing gyms to come onboard was tough, but our value proposition gradually enticed them. According to experts – the bigger challenge for startups in organizing fitness market comes from the consumer side. Meanwhile, people perceive a challenge today because accessing fitness is difficult. Apart from maintaining the routine despite work/personal time commitments, most gyms require customers to make upfront commitments of thousands of rupees – that’s not the kind of disposable income the mass market commands yet.

FITPASS already sells nutritional and health supplements besides sportswear and athletic merchandise via its marketplace. Fitness consciousness is rapidly rising in India and the siblings are trying to make fitness and everything related to it easily accessible and affordable to the Indian consumer. The opportunity for organising a highly-fragmented fitness market is undoubtedly lucrative. According to a study by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and global consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the Indian fitness and slimming market was estimated at Rs 60,000 crore in 2012. The fitness and wellness industry seems to be standing at the inflection point, and new models for aggregation will disrupt this sector in the coming years.
