DIPA KARMAKAR

Blog by : Riya Rathore

The Tripura girl Dipa Karmakar  she is first Indian woman gymnast to ever compete in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last year and the first Indian gymnast to compete in 52 years, made the country proud by qualifying for the vaults final in her Olympics debut. An exponent of the Produnova vault, Ms Karmakar is also one of the five gymnasts who have mastered this extremely difficult technique. She was ranked sixth in the team event qualifiers. In the individual event, she was ranked 22nd in the qualifiers, but lost to Iwona Marcinkiewicz of Poland by 101–103 in the round of 64. She was sent out in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s individual recurve event losing 2-6 to Mexico’s Roman Aida at the London Olympics 2012. She, along with Dola Banerjee and Pranitha Vardhineni were ranked sixth in the team event qualifiers. Karmakar, who shot to fame after becoming the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympic finals, was forced to return the luxury car as the roads in her hometown of Agartala were narrow and potholed. Besides, the town didn’t have a service center for her car. “Considering her situation, Dipa was given cash amounting to Rs. 25 lakh. Her family bought a car recently, and it was a brand that has a service center in Agartala,” Karmakar’s coach Bisweswar Nandi.

Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who has not competed since her historic fourth place finish in the Rio Olympics, is all set to miss the World Gymnastics Championships as she is recovering from a knee surgery. It is another setback of sorts for the 23-year-old who also missed the Asian Championships earlier this year due to the anterior crucial ligament (ACL) injury. he had undergone the surgery in April and her rehab will take at least six months before she can resume training. The World Championships will be held in Canada in October. Her coach Nandi  said that the ward will not be competition ready for the World Championships and therefore the focus shifts to the Commonwealth and Asian Games next year. Dipa, who had scored 14.850 in the qualifying round, could have got more points had she not landed on her haunches in her risky ‘Produnova’ vault for which she is now known all over the world. In her ‘Produnova’, Dipa did everything right except that she did not have a perfect landing as her buttocks just touched the ground and thereby she lost points.
