Atanu with that has moved into the third round where his opponent is yet to be determined. He won the first two sets 28-26 and 29-26 after Puentes started things off slowly with four 8-pointers of the six arrows.
However he stepped things up in the next two sets to claw back into the match. In the third set, both archers were at 18-18 after the first two arrows but after Puentes’ 9, Atanu could muster an eight for a close finish.
The fourth set saw Puentes get back into it after an 8 to kick things off. While Atanu scored three straight 9’s, the Cuban archer hit two 10’s in a row to force a deciding set.
In the deciding set, both the archers scored 9 apiece on their first attempts but with Atanu going first, he hit two straight 10’s with Puentes scoring a 9 in the second shot. Leading 29-18 with a shot to go, Puentes scored a 10 but that was always never going to be enough.
Earlier in the day, Atanu Das easily beat his Nepalese opponent Jitbahadur Muktan 6-0 in the first round of the individual round to progress forward in the men’s event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Atanu sealed the deal with three straight 10 arrows to win the third set 30-26 after he was already leading after the first two sets. With an unassailable lead, Das shook hands with his opponent because the fourth or fifth set became unneccesary.
Atanu had won the first two sets 29-26 and 29-24 while Muktan struggled to match the Indians’ hot streak.
