Just like other sports in the country, Indian women’s cricket team is also struggling to break away from the shadows of the men’s cricket side. But, one female cricketer has carved her own niche to steal the spotlight this year.
Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s T20 captain has been sensational this year. But, becoming the first Indian women’s cricketer to be signed by an overseas T20 franchise was arguably the biggest moment for Indian women’s cricket in 2016. She smashed a blistering 28-ball 47 for Sydney Thunder on her WBBL debut and then followed it up with an all-round performance of 4-27 and 21-ball 30 to help Sydney seal an eight-wicket win over Melbourne Stars.
The right-hander also led India to the Asian T20 Cup title earlier this month. She marshalled her troops to a 17-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in a gruelling final.
