The rainy season; every ones favorite season – a relief from the sweltering summer and an excuse to sip on hot cups of tea and enjoy savory snacks. As the rain pours down it becomes difficult to step out to exercise and it is easy to pack on some extra kilos during this time. This is one of the flip sides to the otherwise lovely season, along with increased cases of the cold, cough and flu as during the monsoons our body’s immunity is reduced. Some even suffer from indigestion, allergies and infections. This is mainly caused by the increased humidity in the air, the sudden change in climate and the spurt of breeding of mosquitoes who tend to thrive in such conditions.

There are a few things to keep in mind to stay guarded from the health hazards of this season and to enjoy the rains.

Pay attention to your diet. What you give is what you get, and this also applies to your body. It is a known fact that you should never eat unless you are really hungry. This is even more relevant during the monsoon season. Over eating is one of the main causes of indigestion.

What should you eat?

Humidity makes a breeding ground for disease. Malaria, dengue and many more such illnesses. Other than this water borne diseases such as dysentery, typhoid and leptospirosis spread like wild fire in this season. Your immune system is your best friend more than ever now. Here is an extensive list of what you should have and what you should avoid in the rainy season.

How to stay fit in the monsoons junk food

  • Avoid street and junk foods, howsoever tempting they may be.
  • Opt for foods that saturate water and are rich in fiber. Brown rice, oats, and barley are the best foods one could have in this monsoon.
  • Garlic is a great immunity booster.
  • Choose yogurt, with dry fruits over milk.

so have a happy and safe monsoon! 🙂
