Champions Trophy: IND VS SL

Virat Kohli was expecting that it would be possible to depend 321 but all went wrong. Virat said” I don’t think so. We all felt that we had enough at the half way mark. To chase that down total down, hats off to them. I think our bowlers bowled decently well. Well there is hindsight to things when you don’t win games. There is food for thought. You gotta give credit to other teams.”
This was a famous and historic win for Sri Lanka. They batted brilliantly. They were calm under pressure and believed in their ability. India’s two bowlers, Jadeja and Pandya, were targeted very effectively. India, frankly did not know what hit them. They were outsmarted. India have to win the last league match, against South Africa on Sunday, to make the next stage. Not too much time to introspect why they lost so badly despite making 321.
All the exposure to IPL might actually be working against the Indian bowlers. The Lankan batsmen know what to expect from each bowler. Bumrah’s slower deliveries were awaited and neatly pushed away to third man for runs. So too Bhuvi and Umesh Yadav’s deliveries. The Lankan batsmen knew what to expect in different situations. The worst was Jadeja. They knew exactly what he’d deliver and went after him.
Sri Lanka is really turning it on here with some outrageous stroke play. Their coach had said in the tournament build-up that they would like to see good batting wickets to allow their strong batting line up to express themselves and they have done exactly that here today. Once they get a solid platform, this team is capable of taking on any target.
It was one of the top wins. To restrict India under 321 and defeat them is quite fantastic. We knew this is a good batting wicket and 300 is quite chaseable. You hit a lot of balls and try and keep yourself fit. As long as you hit the balls and keep yourself fit that’s all that counts. To walk in and bat like Dhanusha did after what happened to Kapugedara was fantastic. The opening partnership was the changing moment.

The result threw Group B wide open as now all four teams are on 2 points and the last two matches, (India vs South Africa and Pakistan vs Sri Lanka), will decide who goes through to the semi-finals.
