HOW AYURVEDA ‘DOSHA HEALING’ TOOL IS GREAT AID TO IDENTIFY, UNDERSTAND AND TAKE CARE?

Article By Dr. Sonica Krishanwoman-768x399.jpg

In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine, the patient is considered as a whole: physical, mental and spiritual aspects to be included in the therapy to the health of the people – to bring into balance – through the use of natural resources. The principles of self-healing laid down by our ancient sages thousands of years ago are equally true even today.

Why Ayurveda Is So Apt?

Ayurveda – translated from the Sanskrit language, Ayus  means life and Veda for knowledge – is the science of life.

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medical systems in the world and has its origins in India.

The best part is that Ayurveda, that is the ancient super science of healing naturally, focuses greatly on preventive healthcare, and while it endorses the essential diet and lifestyle modifications for a healthy and cheerful life.

But Why Bother?

Owing to the variety of lifestyle diseases, mental ailments, behavioral discrepancies et all, we are more or less left with the choice of taking our health in our hands. This is where Dosha Healing comes into play.

Dosha Healing is an important tool of Ayurveda wisdom sciences which guides you to make the essential diet and lifestyle modifications
particularly designed for your basic dosha type.

As Ayurveda lays great focus on prevention of the disease, it becomes obligatory to understand about what kind of foods and everyday habits are useful for you, what could be causing harm and also how you could provide self-care to yourself (and your loved ones), so as to live your life fully enjoying the fruit of wellness and contentment.

Become Your Own Healer

Dosha Healing is all about how you can become your own healer!
This wisdom science of Ayurveda focuses on three parameters –

  • Self-Identification,
  • Self-Understanding
  • and Self – Care.

Identify, Understand And Take Care

  1. Identify yourself (in accordance to the dosha which is dominant within you)
  2. Understand yourself (how your dominant dosha makes you different in both the spheres of physical constitution and mental temperament; which is recognized as your Prakriti).
  3. Take care of yourself (and become aware of the imbalances or Vikriti that might be setting into your system owing to the diet and lifestyle incongruity).

The Healer Lies Within

Dosha Healing is great aid to identify, understand and take care of yourself lifelong.

In other words, you need to comprehend that it is rather imperative to discover and understand your natural entity today, so you could be your own guide lifelong!

This is because assessing your basic and inborn nature at first helps you to accept yourself, and then you aptly intend to make lifestyle changes in accordance to your own self.

Consequently it is perhaps the only therapy you need in both Curative as well as Preventive terms, so as to enjoy till the last breath a
life full of virtues of natural wellness and freedom from disease.

The Doshas Co-Exist

These three doshas or humors of the body are the prime attributes that are significant for not only the upholding of the human body, but also in every little aspect that causes balance or even imbalance within the body. Vata or the air, Pitta or the fire and kapha or the Phlegm are entirely imbibed within the body.

Ayurveda Tridosha Philosophy – Vata, Pitta And Kapha Doshas

The Prakriti of a person may be defined as the totality comprising of his physical attributes, his mental characteristics, and his innate nature.

The prakriti or the basic constitution (and temperament) of an individual is believed to be innate and more or less remains the same throughout his or her life span.
According to Ayurveda philosophy, every living body in the universe is believed to be a combination of the three doshas or body humors viz. –

  1. Vata or the air,
  2. Pitta or the fire
  3. and Kapha or the phlegm.

The human prakriti can broadly be categorized into three distinct types. These are –

  1. Vata Type,
  2. Pitta Type
  3. and Kapha Type.

Think It Over

We need to understand that most of the qualities, both good and bad—the looks, the talents, and attitudes are necessarily God-gifted and inborn. It is believed that there are three basic types of constitutions based on the three doshas or the body humors. Each person falls into one of these three constitutions so read on for the explanation of each definition (One of the three doshas could be dominant within your personality!).

Dosha Healing Reveals Dosha Imbalance

  • Ayurveda believes that whenever a disease takes form and sets into your system, the primary cause is imbalanced Dosha (body humor).
  • Therefore, so as to combat the ailment, the basic principle to get rid of the same and also to restore and retain wellness, would certainly be of balancing the vitiated Dosha.
  • Dosha Healing, thus is an easy tool for identifying the dosha imbalance.
  • Also, when you are experiencing the ancient Ayurveda wisdom of Dosha Healing, you are able to take a more serious note of the maladies that the vitiation or aggravation of either of the three doshas viz. Vata, Pitta and Kapha, is bound to present itself within your system. Although in many cases you might have already frequented some of the ailments relating to Dosha imbalance.

How Dosha Healing Helps?

  • Although most of us today seem to have mixed personalities, there still is a dominant element in all of us.
  • And this basic element governs our totality and makes up our indispensable personality.
  • This basic element or Dosha as proclaimed in our primordial text, subsists in three prime forms viz. Vata or the air, Pitta or the fire and Kapha or the phlegm.

This Is What Happens

  • When the air is dominant, it is apt to make you extremely erratic.
  • Whereas the fire type individuals would be naturally stimulated.
  • And yet supremacy of phlegm in the system reasons for physical and mental permanence.
  • Thus, Dosha Healing is a sure support to make you identify, understand and take care of your natural wellness lifelong.

Dosha Imbalance Causes Disease

  1. Ayurveda believes that imbalance of the Vata dosha (air body humor) results into production of 80 types of diseases or disorders.
  2. Whereas the fire or Pitta dosha can cause 40 types.
  3. And imbalance in the Kapha dosha (phlegm) would stand responsible for 20 types of ailments.

Diseases Relating To Vata Dosha Imbalance

Vata Dosha imbalance may result into diseases like  –

  • muscular cramps,
  • joint pains,
  • stiffness,
  • palpitations,
  • deafness,
  • partial loss of vision etc.

Diseases Relating To Pitta Dosha Imbalance

Ailments that demonstrate of Pitta dosha imbalance are like –

  • burning sensation in the entire body,
  • excessive perspiration,
  • foul body odour,
  • fainting,
  • mouth ulcers etc

Diseases Relating To Kapha Dosha Imbalance

Kapha dosha imbalance and vitiation presents itself in the form of
diseases like –

  • Excessive drowsiness,
  • lethargy,
  • excess of sleep,
  • obesity,
  • suppression of digestion,
  • skin allergy et al.

What Is The Need For Dosha Healing?

  • The three doshas – vata, pitta, and kapha get easily influenced by our everyday diet and lifestyle, wherein the doshas lose their equilibrium.
  • They tend to either decrease or increase in the body and this makes them to result in forming of a disease.

Balancing the Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha

Balancing the Vata dosha

  1. In order to combat Vata imbalance, one needs to take charge of his diet and routine just like serving a close friend.
  2. Keeping the stomach empty would invite aggravation of the air body humor or the Vata dosha.
  3. The meals should not be too heavy but more frequent.

Balancing the Pitta Dosha

  1. To combat a pitta imbalance, it is recommended to take up the regime that renders opposing qualities as that of the Pitta dosha or the fire body humor.
  2. As the property of the fire humor is hot and intense, Ayurveda suggests living in cooler, soothing and calming environments, away from sweating and parching heat.
  3. The imbalance can be refined by imbibing whatever is cooling and soothing.

Balancing the Kapha dosha

  1. Kapha imbalance needs more grave lines of self-handling.
  2. This is because the Kapha individual has a propensity to be more static and stubborn with his likes and tastes.
  3. The stubborn Kapha is rather tricky to treat.
  4. This is mainly because of the inert trait of the earth element that this humor imbibes. Hence all intricate activities and potent stimulating diet is meant for the phlegm humor types.

WATCH YOUR DIET

Article by Dr. Sonica Krishan

In Ayurveda, a lot of stress has been laid on proper food habits. Some of the food combinations result in production of toxicity inside the body due to their being opposite in action. This is because intake of these combinations causes toxicity. It further creates an impurity in the blood stream resulting in production of skin disease.

Incompatible Food Combinations

These incompatible diet or food combinations are called as Virudh Aahar. A few types have been listed :

1. Guna Virudh

This means the foods are opposing in properties. Taking a hot and a cold product simultaneously. An example is eating a pulse called kulth with milk.

2. Kaala Virudh

Foods that are against the climatic conditions. For eg. Intake of more food stuff that are warm in action during summer like dry fruits in summer season.

3. Agni Virudh

The diet that is against the digestive powers. Eg. Taking a heavy meal by a person with lesser digestive powers.

4. Matra Virudh

This means when the diet is against the quantity. For example Honey and ghee (clarified butter) when taken in equal quantities results in toxicity.

5. Prakiriti Virudh

Food combination that is against nature like taking fish with milk.

6. Dosha Virudh

When the diet is against the doshas or the body humours. A person with a particular constituency, if takes more of the products which further aggravate the dosha. Eg. A person with increased pitta keeps on taking hot, fried and spicy food.

7. Parihar Virudh

Some products which should not be taken after eating something. For example taking cold water after eating ghee is harmful.

8. Sanyog Virudh

Some combinations which act as toxic eg. When milk is taken taken with sour products.

Ayurveda Diet Tips And Recommendations

Three pillars support our ‘building’ of health viz. balanced diet, daily exercise and proper rest.

Our diet should be nourishing and contain all the important components i.e. carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Also, it is equally important to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday.

The daily food intake should preferably be freshly cooked, appealing to taste and easily digestible.

Intake of spicy, fried foods, cold drinks, caffeine rich foods and drinks, alcohol etc should be minimized.

The Six Tastes

Try and includes all the six tastes in your daily diet so as to enjoy the fruit of health. These are sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent.

Six types of tastes are known to your taste buds viz. sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent.

But it is less known fact that these not only render the differentiation of tastes but also provide a good contribution to your basic health.

These various tastes result into nurturing into various actions in the body systems. It is therefore advisable to choose and supplement the same after actually considering your body needs and suitability. So as to become a proud possessor of sound health, it is also equally important that your daily diet contains all the six tastes.

Effect of Various Tastes On Your Health

  • The sweet taste is believed to increase the general body resistance against a disease. As per Ayurvedic text, this specific taste helps to increase the body tissues and as a consequence, it enhances the ‘Ojas’ or the vital energy reserve of the body and mind. This taste therefore aids in increasing not only immunity, but also the general health of an individual and keeps aging at a distance.
  • Sour taste is believed to enhance the strength of the body by providing nutrition to the body tissues. Also, it increases the taste for food and salivation.
  • The salty taste imparts a relish for the food and provides softness to the body parts. At the same time, it causes a decrease in the body strength of an individual and increases weakness and lethargy.
  • The bitter taste is believed to cause demolition of body tissues and obesity. It is also anti toxic in nature; and thus destroys intestinal parasites and aids in curing skin ailments.
  • Pungent taste is a blood purifier and helps in creating a good appetite. Also, it has a nature of drying the body tissue mainly mucous, fat and pus.
  • Astringent taste causes dryness of the body tissues and lessens the secretion from mucous membranes.

Effect On Digestion

  • The tastes also show different processes of digestion. The diet articles that are sweet, sour and salty in taste have the property of being heavy, slimy and oily. Therefore the same are mildly laxative by nature.
  • Whereas, the other three tastes i.e. bitter, pungent and astringent are light and dry by nature and so tend to cause constipation.

Cold And Hot

All the six types of tastes, according to their mode of action, can be divided into two categories – Cold and Hot.

The tastes sweet, pungent and astringent are considered to be cold in nature and thus provide a cool to the body system by reducing the body heat. Therapeutically, these are used in heat related disorders like fainting and burning inside the body. Whereas, the other three tastes i.e. sour, salty and bitter are generally hot in nature and therefore act in increasing the body heat.

For a virtuous and sustained healthy living, it is important to cultivate the habit of using all the six tastes in our daily diet. The knowledge of their actions on the body systems can prove helpful so as to supplement the desired taste, in accordance to the body requirements. And the timely curb on the tastes more extensively used, can help to keep the disease at a distance.

A balanced intake of all the six tastes ensures good health. Whereas, these ‘Rasas’ or tastes when taken in disproportion results into distortion in either of the three ‘Doshas’ or body humors viz. air, heat and phlegm, and this results into production of a disease.

RELIEF FROM ARTHRITIS AND JOINT PAINS NATURALLY!

Article by Dr. Sonica Krishanjoint-pains.jpg

Joint Pain is something that often comes along as we age, when our joints start to give up, and gradually the pain starts to grow. Of all the seasons, it is winters that are known to cause maximum damage to the joints. This is mainly due to external cold and dryness which amplifies the problem and makes it difficult for us to bear the associated swelling and pain. Also, it is usually during this shift of weather that the symptoms of possible arthritis may start to surface.

Here is some brilliant natural assistance that could be supplemented for relieving joint pains

1. Triphala Guggul

This is an age-old and time-tested herbal preparation, and something which Ayurveda absolutely recommends, especially in case of joint pains. Triphala is a mix of three incredibly healthy herbs viz. Harad, Baheda and Amla. And this is a great source of antioxidants and detoxifying agents. Guggulu, a gum resin obtained from Myrrh, adds an extra share of anti-inflammatory benefits to the combination. These, along with polyphenols and flavonoids, act against the inflammation causing agents, thus relieving joint pains.

2. Boswellia

Boswellia serrata is basically the gum resin extracted from Boswellia tree. It combats a variety of inflammatory issues in our body, and research swears by its contribution in treating some of the severest cases of arthritis.

3. Calcium

One of the most obvious must haves in our diet, calcium is also recommended to be taken as an essential supplement in order to make up for any possible lack of this particular nutrient in our body. This is because a calcium deficiency has maximum chances of making us prone to many bones and joint related issues. Therefore, make sure to add dark green, leafy vegetables, low-fat milk, cheese and other dairy products to your diet. On the other hand, you need to ensure that your body is absorbing that calcium. That’s why it is important to sunbathe and include sufficient vitamin D in our everyday diet.

4. Glucosamine

A chemical compound that is found in our body, glucosamine is something that naturally contributes in building and taking care of the cartilage, which provides natural cushioning between our joint bones. With age, however, the amount of glucosamine our body creates becomes insufficient, and that is when there comes a need for us to look for supplements. Adding sufficient glucosamine levels help in easing the pain and the subsequent stiffness of the joints.

5. Salmon Oil

Sufficient inclusion of this fish oil in our diet helps in maintaining healthy, supple joints. A great source of omega-3 fatty acids, Salmon oil reduces the inflammation and therefore, any possible progression of joint pains and arthritis. Complimented with regular exercise, the salmon oil also ensures ample flow of blood to our joints and maintains their overall health and mobility.

LEARN TO LIVE – IN YOUR OWN SPECIAL STYLE!

ARTICLE BY DR. SONICA KRISHAN

relax-05

“To live is the rarest thing in this world, most people just exist” – Oscar Wilde.

I totally concur with these words. We seem to have un-necessarily complicated our lives today. Although, we are breathing , yet we have somehow elapsed the simple principles of living. Here are some simple and realistic ways I could think of that we need to bring into our lives to make our stay on this planet worth living !

Nine Ways To Live Your Life, Not Simply Exist!

  1. Just Be

Looking outwards in Nature, I could contemplate with this simple and yet highly essential wisdom of just being. Not only does it make sense to enjoy your life in your own blissful realm, but also it is so much relieving that you do not need to act, talk , work and be the person who you are actually not.

How This Came To Mind?

  • A rose would lovingly develop and bloom in its own proximity, and would never want to become a lotus flower and in the consequence lose its legitimacy for always.
  • When I water the plants in my backyard, I am simply awed by the fragrance of wet mudthat these plants seem to confer immediately.
  • Also, when the kids rushing off to their school spare a moment to kiss me goodbye uttering, Bye Ma! I find my reward!
  • All this is rewarding by ‘Just being” and I am able to receive the reward by ‘Just being’.
  • As the maxim goes..’ Be the moon, or be the star. But be the best wherever you are!’
  • You can be your best, only if you allow yourself to ‘just be’!

2. Live In Abundance

Are you a compulsory miser? Being a miser can be circumstantial, and also it can be rather habitual. Think of this, when you are restricting yourself from all the joys that you seek, are you being just to your own self?

Give It A Thought

  • Why be scared to present yourself with all that you have desired.
  • As time goes by, these desires do not last, but mostly leave a small breach in your perception of fulfillment.
  • Spending on yourself and your loved ones not only helps them to bask in the glory of abundance, but also flourishes on your being the gratitude you are here to render.

Story

  • I was actually a little surprised when a rickshaw puller boasted of purchasing IPL cricket match tickets worth Rs. 5000.
  • He would say – ‘At least me and my family will cheerfully get pleasure from those hours in the stadium and I can always work again to recover the amount.
  • He  mused further that Allah is great and he is there to take care.’
  • So, you don’t need to be a spendthrift, but as much you can allow yourself to –
  1. Live in abundance,
  2. Breath in gratitude
  3. And attract His grace!

3. Be Carefree And Be Liberated

Life is too short to be tied in shackles. We tend to surrender to worldly bindings physically, mentally as well as spiritually; and then suddenly one day the unconventional essence of our being simply escapes.

  • It has to be kept in mind more often that we are not a body which is having a soul, rather we are soul having a body. The soul is always free and versatile, it has been and always will be.
  • Only it is changing clothes as entering new bodies, but its basic love is liberation.
  • Life is temporary, then we try to bind ourselves with permanent obsessions.
  • We need to learn to allow ourselves to be a little carefree, a little liberated.

4. Keep Regular Watch

Heard the story about the two wolves? One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

  • He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. “
  • One wolf is Evil –  It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
  • The other is Good –  It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
  • The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”
  • The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed !”

My Thoughts

Thus, you need to always keep a regular watch on your thoughts. Practicing meditation has been highly supportive for me to keep the watch on my mind’s projections. This is as I could realize that our worst enemies are our own thoughts.

5. Listen To Silence More Often

Silence and serenity are synonyms. This means if we want peace and composure in our lives, we need to value silence.

What An Experience!

Recently, we went to beautiful, natural spots on our vacation. Although, it was pure nature , away from the hustle and bustle of life. But was it?

Rather, there was so much noise of tourists shouting due to rush, the horse-walas trying to persuade customers, the shrieking horns of vehicles, the screaming of vendors selling their stuff.

We were naturally perplexed.

The beautiful and serene place seemed to be crying for silence.

Then A Thought

  • I thought then, if I am so much confounded and affected, what about Mother Nature?
  • Whom we have virtually made pathetic by snatching away her right and magnitude of quietness.
  • I felt really apologetic and helpless.
  • On returning back, there has been news of Natural fury.
  • Be silent, and reflect on this for a while – who is to be  blamed?

6. Be Enduring And Always Grateful

This is an interesting story.

  • One day a construction supervisor from sixth floor of building was calling a worker working on the ground floor.
  • But because of construction noise, the worker on ground floor did not hear his supervisor calling.
  • Then, to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor threw a ten rupee note from up which fell right around in front of the worker.
  • The worker picked up the note, put it in his pocket & continued with his work.
  • Again to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor now threw five hundred rupee note.
  • The worker did the same, picked the five hundred rupee note, put it in his pocket & started doing his job.
  • Finally, Now to draw attention of the worker, the supervisor picked a small stone and threw it on worker.
  • The stone hit exactly the worker’s head. This time the worker looked up and the supervisor could finally communicate with the worker.

It Is So Similar

This story goes similarly in our lives. God wants to communicate with us, his children,  but we are too occupied with worldly jobs. Then God gives us small gifts and also sometimes bigger ones, but we take these for granted , only thinking that we have been lucky. We hardly take time to understand how and why we have been blessed with the rewards and more often we do not even spare time to be thanking the Almighty. Then when we are hit with some stone, which we call as problems, we look up to Him and try to communicate with God through our prayers and offerings.

I Witnessed

The other day when my son recovered from his seasonal fever, I asked him did he remember to thank God for this. He seemed a little surprised saying to me, but mom I am healthy again because of you. ( I being a doctor and had been giving him medicine). I told him then, even as a doctor, all I can do is treat a patient, but to cure is in His hands. We must always bear in mind to thank him for all the troubles that we do not have  and also stop complaining for the troubles we have.

7. Rejoice In Your Purpose

Do you have a purpose in life, or are you unknowingly simply treading your way on earth? I believe it is rather mandatory for each one of us to ascertain our purpose of life, and then rejoice in the same. And let this be our own individual take. We cannot compare with and try to familiarize with the ‘purpose of life’ of other fellow-humans. It has to dwell from your own being, and it has to be self-designed. You will more easily discover your purpose, once you are sure about your passion. Discover your passion..and let it unfold into the purpose of your life. As the adage goes – ‘ What I am is God’s gift to me. What I become, is my gift to God’. Discover the purpose of your life, dwell in it sincerely and rejoice. This is your gift back to the Almighty, who has gifted you with the paramount excellence of human birth!

8. Welcome Tough Times

‘Tough Times never last, but Tough people always do!’ Do tough times scare you or are you prepared to face head-on, whatever big or small intricacies life brings forth?

2 Examples

  1. Remember how when the nail paint tends to dry up, we pour in a little nail-paint remover into the same and it starts working again. Although the nail-paint remover would otherwise remove the nail paint, but at this time, it is providing solution for the nail paint and sets it working.
  2. Similarly, when the arrow has to move forward, it is first pulled back by the bow; which provides it with forward thrust. When we are occasionally bewildered by tough times, we must understand that these are the precious moments in life, which would in some way sooner or later lead us to emerge as successful entity.

9. Now Or Never

Recently when I had this bad toothache which tormented me through the night, I told my son in the morning that the pain was so bad that I couldn’t sleep the whole night. He thought for a while and reverted back – In that case mom, you should have used the time sitting in meditation as you’re always keen to spare enough time for your prayer schedules (His understanding). I told him to understand the basic need and magnitude of health and fitness.

Make Yourself Strong

This is because as and when you are unwell, you are not physically capable even to sit in meditation / prayer.  And thus when we peep into our everyday erroneous diets and lifestyles, every now and then losing stability of our emotional mental frame becomes rather understandable. Apparently, we cannot constantly hold onto our mental peace and thus sooner or later our physical health is at stake.

Therefore, you need to make yourself internally strong and efficient, so as to take charge of your mental state now. Expand the ‘Spiritual‘ you, irrespective to the age you belong. It has to be now, or it could be never.

Keep Cool With Cooling Summer Foods And Herbs

Article by Dr. Sonica Krishansummers-1

Summer vacations may be the best, but the heat is quite another story. Fortunately, you don’t have to just sweat it out. Here’s some simple Ayurvedic guidance to help you stay cool during the summer season or Grisham Ritu.

What Ayurveda Recommends

In Ayurveda, food recommendations are always personalized based on one’s prakriti or balance of doshas.

Ayurveda also recognizes the importance of harmony with nature, which is why your diet must change with the changing seasons.

In summer, the focus is on foods and ingredients that have a sweet taste and a cooling effect on the body [not necessarily cold foods].

Ayurvedic recommendations also take into account the properties of different foods, suggesting that a summer diet should focus on foods that are light and easy to digest, while they may be a little oily or unctuous.

Summer Foods To Avoid

As per the teachings of Ayurveda, it is advisable to cut back on foods with salty, sour and pungent tastes. Hot and spicy foods should be avoided as they can aggravate pitta dosha and alcohol intake should also be restricted.

Failing to adhere to these diet guidelines puts your overall health at risk. You may experience –

  • general weakness
  • fatigue,
  • anxiety,
  • as well as a burning sensation in the body.

Ayurvedic Foods And Drinks For A Cooling Summer Diet

  • Ayurveda clearly defines the efficacy of a diet dominated by foods with sweet, light and liquid properties to beat the heat.
  • Fresh cool beverages are best consumed in earthen pots and utensils.
  • Not only does this add a distinct fragrant aroma to drinks, it is also believed to be strengthening for the heart.
  • One of the best summer drinks mentioned is a sweetened beverage prepared by mixing Shakara (molasses) in Sattu (flour from roasted gram), which makes it naturally soothing in the hot summer heat.

Cooling Summer Drink

  • You can consume higher volumes of juicy, sweet fruits and vegetables with high water content like watermelons, ripe mangoes, gourds, cucumbers and zucchini.
  • Take more of Coconut water, nimbu-pani (sweet lime water), sweetened lassi or butter-milk, and sweetened milk with rose petals added.
  • These drinks can make for good refreshing beverage choices to keep your system cool.
  • Feast on the freshly-blended fruit juices and nectars prepared from summer fruits like grapes, sweet pineapple and watermelon as these are nutritious, refreshing and most importantly incredibly cooling.
  • Aam panna, a drink made from the pulp of raw mangoes, can be easily prepared by boiling raw mangoes in water to create the pulp. You can then add some jaggery, roasted cumin seeds and black salt to the mango pulp and it should be ready to consume.
  • It is best to avoid any alcohol and fermented drinks during the summer months, but if you do consume them, make sure to restrict intake and add plenty of water to the drinks.

Cooling Summer Foods And Herbs

  • Fresh leaves of mint or pudina have a strong cooling effect and may be chewed raw or added to salads and other dishes.
  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry), which is renowned in Ayurveda for its high nutritional value, also helps cope with the heat. It can be consumed in the form of fresh juice or as a sweet jelly called ‘amla murabba’. As it is cold by nature and has a sweet aftertaste, it is useful in decreasing the body heat and can help prevent heat-related disorders.
  • Rose syrup and water are regarded as extremely cooling, making them perfect for the summer. You can consume rose preparations in the form of rose syrup or rose jelly (‘Gulkand’), a combination of rose petals and sugar.
  • In Ayurveda, coconut is described as having a sweet taste (rasa) and cooling properties (virya). This makes coconut a helpful aid to correct dosha imbalances caused by aggravation of the pitta.
  • Include grapes in your summer diet. Grapes are highly recommended in any summer diet because of their high water content and light properties.
  • The grapes are also highly nutritious, rejuvenating the body and strengthening immune function.

With its calming nature and cooling effect, cardamom can be supportive in a summer diet. Adding choti elaichi or cardamom to your diet can help to relieve any burning sensation and heat disorders.

Can Ginger Help To Treat Chikungunya?

Article by Dr. Sonica Krishanginger-free-picOver the past few years, we have witnessed a surprisingly sudden spread of Chikungunya. It is for this reason that it becomes all the more necessary and significant to be aware about the onset of this health problem, along with its symptoms as well as the methods of cure.

Not So Simple

  • First we need to understand that Chikungunya is not just simply another viral illness which is caused by an infected mosquito’s bite.
  • Rather, this particular infection is somehow more solemn and yet disturbing.
  • Although the Chikungunya infection is rarely life threatening.

What Happens When You Catch Chikungunya Infection?

  • During the first week of infection, chikungunya virus can be found in the blood.
  • The virus that causes Chikungunya reside at the major joints such as elbow, wrist, knee and ankle. They produce toxins and affect the immune mechanism.
  • This further lead to muscular and joint pains accompanied by fever.
  • The cartilages also get affected and cause joint inflammation.
  • Moreover, an infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people.
  • Generally you could experience signs and symptoms comprising fever and joint pains.

How Does Chikungunya Infection Spread?

Chikungunya infection does not spread by touch. This is basically an infection caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). This particular virus is present in the blood after the person is bitten by the carrier mosquito.

This Is What Happens

When this blood which is already infected is once again sucked by another mosquito, the Chikungunya virus is then passed from an infected person to another individual through mosquito bites. This is how the infection spreads and this generally happens in the first week of catching the infection. Chikungunya virus is then transmitted to more people through mosquito bites.

Watch These Indications

The Chikungunya infection is usually accompanied by several complications. Keep a check on your health condition if you come across some peculiar signs and symptoms. These could be like –

  • Relatively high body temperature, headache, nausea, vomiting and skin rashes along with severe inflammation and discomfort in the joints.
  • It is also believed that this inflammation is basically our immune system’s natural response to the infection, in order to take control of the situation and prevent any further damage.
  • Many times if suffering from the Chikungunya infection, you may experience severe muscle pains, joint pains, fever as well as rash.
  • Yet, the same is what remains most prominent and painful among the ones who get infected, something that seems to take the longest time to go away.
  • Besides, the virus is often also accompanied by severe weakness in the body.

Awareness Is Necessary

Therefore, if you happen to be suffering from any or combination of the above mentioned symptoms, you need to get yourself tested against the possible mosquito borne infection.

  • In case the results are positive, you need to keep calm and not fret on the physical condition.
  • Also, do Bear in mind that it is important to begin with the treatment, as soon as the infection is detected, before it becomes troublesome.
  • This is because in this case it could limit our body movements and render us incapable of carrying out the day to day activities.
  • Plenty of rest is needed and is actually good for you.

Precautions And Understanding

Please understand that as such, there is no sure-shot vaccination or particular cure for this viral infection. Yet, this is also the time when you need to take care and practice some precautions for the same.

  • Also, take care to keep yourself hydrated all through. For this, you would need to drink good amount of fluids so as to save yourself from dehydration.

More Care Is Needed

Please note that it is not sufficient to rely solely on the symptoms, and therefore, a blood test is usually required in order to confirm the infection and begin with the treatment. Apart from rest and increased fluid intake, the patient is usually recommended few OTC medications like Paracetamol, which could help reduce fever and pain, thus providing some relief from this debilitating disease.

  • It is believed that – “Prevention is always better than cure!” You need to be cautious in providing yourself and your loved ones with the goodness of Chikungunya prevention.
  • For aiming to prevent Chikungunya infection, it is essential to consider about controlling mosquitoes both indoors as well as outdoors.
  • Try to minimize skin exposure as much as possible so as to keep away from the undesirable mosquito bite. For this purpose, you could keep your bare body parts in stringent fabric covering. Or else you may take to some mosquito repellent options.
