Four Reasons to make a Career in Fitness & Health

Blog by : Anushka Jain

Choosing a career in today’s world is a real dilemma. While most people get a degree, a corporate, secure job with lots of money and no time, some of us actually want to follow our passion and do something that makes us happy. Staying fit & healthy was that for my mother, a dietician and yoga teacher. She was not even young when she decided to follow her dreams. She was middle-aged, free and bored. Her routine at even that time included waking up early to do yoga, eat a balanced diet and provide everyone in our family the same, giving advices to relatives for their daily meals. Soon, she realized she could put all that into use and become a professional. How did she do that is a long process; I am not here to tell you that. I am here to tell you about the happiness she feels while doing it; and even now when she is almost fifty, how fit and healthy she is. You should know this because if you are doubtful about stepping foot in the fitness industry, you would not be after reading this.
So, let me tell you the four reasons to make a career in fitness & health:

  1. High demand: Yes, you will be shocked to know but there is a high demand of fitness instructors, dieticians, physical therapists etc. Hospitals, gyms, fitness & sports clubs, schools are all looking for people with certified skills for these jobs. In the growing awareness of health, health experts are highly required in all these places. Not only them but even celebrities need personal trainers for their daily work-out and meal plans. This has led to increase in employment opportunities and good income in the fitness industry. If you do decide to choose a career in this field, there would be low risk of failure. Besides, this job is ageless. You can start your fitness career when you’re 20 or 4o, it really doesn’t matter, as long as you have the drive, passion and skills.

  1. Flexibility: A career in the fitness industry would be like – do it however you want to. It is flexible because you are your own boss. You can decide the work hours yourself, the number of days you want to work by yourself. Ultimately, the client will have to listen to you and understand your convenience as you are the coach. You will never feel bored as you do in a 12 hour job. You can decide to take a break anytime you want to. Furthermore, you can decide the fees of your clients by yourself too, according to their customized training, of course. The whole profession would be in your hands. You would never be yelled at for not finishing a project report again. Doesn’t that sound appealing?

  1. Satisfaction of helping others: If you already are a fitness freak, you know the satisfaction you feel when someone who listened to you about meals or fitness is now all healthy because of you. Just imagine, if that one person’s change can make you feel that happy and worthy, how will a career in the field make you feel? Also, you will be doing what you love. That never has a chance of getting monotonous because it gives you the “kick”. I have seen the glee on my mother’s face when her patients tell her that her diet plan saved them. What better job than helping others grow, saving them from chronic diseases and help them reach their potential?

  1. Personal Growth: When you coach others, you are practicing your skill repeatedly too. That makes you better at what you do, helping you grow even more. You are saving others and yourself too in the process. In a job where you earn well, do what you love, help others and see yourself develop into a better figure, who would not feel good? Your motivation will boost every day, leading you to do your job more productively. Besides, who wants an unhealthy health trainer? Staying healthy and fit will set an example for your clients. They will be able to see how their future selves will look with only one glance at you.

While choosing a path in life, we look at only two things: good income and job satisfaction. Here, you have four reasons to follow the path you were born to. I don’t think you should be waiting anymore. Visit the BFY website; start looking for suitable courses in fitness, diet & sports for yourself. Once you are certified, who can stop you from building your dream career?

Students commonly call them as a P.E teacher or a gym teacher. These teachers usually have done a certified course in physical education or athletic training. They start by teaching daily good habits, proper meals, and common exercises good for their body growth. Then, they move on to training kids for numerous sports they want to participate in, including basketball, football, cricket, gymnastics, tennis etc. They also teach kids some other values like discipline, being a team player, leadership skills in sports etc. Physical Education teachers make good money and have satisfactory schedules. If along with your passion for fitness, you love kids, this job is definitely for you.

They also decide people’s daily meals, calorie intakes, dos and don’ts in matters of food etc. If people have specific chronic diseases, they prepare customized diet plans for them in that case. A diet plan of someone with obesity and someone with diabetes will have differences. They earn a lot due to the technical knowledge and experience, and the medical aid they provide.

This means deciding the business structure, the kind of exercises you will promote, the area you will establish it in etc. Also, you must appoint trainers who have enough knowledge and experience in training & exercise. If the gym ends up becoming a successful one, you would be one of the few to live your dream and earn well.

For doing this, you must be certified in any general fitness course, diet & nutrition course etc. and you get paid well according to the magazine’s popularity. This job is convenient for people who want to follow their passion and keep their full-time job as this is part-time only.

  1. Sports trainer:
A sports trainer is usually a certified & licensed health-care professional who practices in the field of sports, athletics etc. They are sometimes specifically an expert in one sport and train their students in the particular sport to become better. You may have visited several sports clubs where there are trainers for cricket, football, tennis, swimming etc. These are the ones we are reading about right now. They choose their method of training themselves but it always requires discipline, hard work and determination. If they do well, they can get a job in national and international clubs too to train professional players who represent our country internationally. Therefore, this is an opportunistic job that pays quite well too.

  1. Sports Journalist:
This is the era of media & journalism. Hence, sports journalism has to be one of the jobs that are best suitable for people passionate about sports. These journalists do not necessarily have done a course in fitness or sports. They are professional journalists who are passionate about sports while having appropriate knowledge about it. They focus on reporting amateur and professional sporting news and events. Their daily job is to witness sports events, observe them carefully and report it to their seniors. Some of the perks of this jobs is – you get to travel, you get to go to numerous sports events and matches, you get paid very well. Kickboxing – fitness course

Blog By – Dr Rohit – BFY Faculty

Kickboxing Fitness combines and modifies martial arts and boxing techniques and movements into a sound workout. There are many aspects of health and fitness that can potentially be improved through this method of training. Cardiovascular endurance & strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility can be improved, depending on the training stimulus utilized. Muscular strength and power can also be enhanced by including training activities and/or methods that specifically promote improvement in those particular fitness components. As skill and fitness levels improve, the physical stress placed on the body can be gradually and progressively increased to establish an environment of continuous improvement.

Kickboxing Fitness trainer course is primarily focused on providing safe and effective exercise activities for participants. It is a fitness certification program that utilizes techniques, movements and combinations of movements from boxing, karate, kickboxing, and self-defence training.

Safety and effectiveness are two important considerations when teaching or leading fitness classes utilizing martial art /boxing movements and techniques.

Kickboxing is typically a competitive (combat) contact sports requiring quick, powerful ,and explosive movements intended to contact an opponents body. But here kickboxing fitness is an activity intended to enhance an individuals health status and conditioning levels and also promotes physical ,emotional, mental well being.

Program Development

There are different ways to structure or develop kickboxing fitness certification classes. The potential options for program structure and class formats could include any of the following :

Program Structure – Skill/Conditioning Breakdown.

Orientation Classes – To market effectively, advertised as a teaching class, not a workout. This is also an opportune time for beginning instructors to hone their knowledge and skills. Recommend 30 minute duration. Class length and class description should alleviate possible intimidation of potentially new, deconditioned members.

Beginner –for novice low intensity level ,single movements gradually grouped into single movement combination, class duration should be of 30-45 min .

Intermediate—it is actually a phase of skill and conditioningintensities of movements are slightly higher and new pattern ,techniques ,drills, are  introduced.recommended duration is 45-60 min.

Advancedintensities of techniques and drills ,combination are further increased.recommended 60-75 min.

Benefits of kickboxing

An anaerobic workout is performed in an interval workout format, with work /rest periods determined by fitness levels of the participants and specific program goals. The main energy system used are phosphogen system and anaerobic glycol sis.

Muscular conditioning

Kickboxing technique movement pattern can be considered more functional than other traditional exercise .muscle endurance improves, as there are repetitive movements .if muscular strength and power is a goal ,specific strength training activities must be incorporated into the class format like plyometrics and other calisthenics exercises(punching bag and medicine ball).

BOB” AND “WEAVE”

BOB :

This movement is similar to lunge  and starts from the fighter’s stance .It can be done stationary or with a slight step forward by the leading leg, as it is executed  by flexing both knees in order to lower the upper body.

“WEAVE”

This movement is a bit more difficult to perform safely than BOB,as it involves greater rotation at the hips /shoulder as well as some necessary pivoting of the feet. Visualize the head drawing the letter U in the air. Maintaining the spinal column in neutral alignment throughout the movement.

How to Get Started as an Online Personal Trainer

Blog by: Suryakant Tripathi

Source: how-to-be-an-online- Personal-trainer

My personal training career was, by all accounts, successful.

After three years training at my university gym while studying kinesiology, I landed a job at a top boutique gym in Toronto. The pay started at $25 per hour. For a 21 year old, that was a fortune.

Within a year I was full with clients. Most of my friends were still in school and I was flushed with cash.

My pay was soon raised to $41 per hour and I consistently trained people for 30-40 hours each week.

I wanted more…

So I took on more.

For two years I ran a bootcamp three days a week from 6:30a.m.-7:30a.m. that made me $120 cash. I would then travel to four clients at their house and charge $65 each hour, in cash. By noon, I was in the gym where I trained eight more clients and ended my day at 8:30p.m.

In one day I would make $710.

But that wasn’t enough. Still, I wanted more.

So I took on the role of senior trainer at my club and made a small salary. I also negotiated a commission for referring my overflow of clients to other trainers.

At 24 years old, I was rolling in dough. But I wasn’t happy. In fact, I was scared.

By all accounts, I reached what many would consider to be the peak of my earning potential. I was charging over $100 for an hour, led a team of trainers, and didn’t have a spare hour to work. If a client cancelled, I could text any of three different people and have someone come in within 45 minutes notice for a session.

The only logical step up was for me to open my own facility. I had offers of financial backers but knew in my heart that I didn’t want to be a gym owner.

I was scared that there weren’t any options other than to continue working the incredibly long days. And if I wanted to make more money, I would have to work even more. In addition…

I became increasingly frustrated by aspects of the industry.

I found training in a gym to be a limiting experience. Due to a combination of gym protocols and limited time, I wasn’t always providing my clients with the type of service that I thought they needed and deserved.

One example was the absurdity of the 1-hour session. An effective workout is almost never exactly finished in one hour’s time. Some protocols call for 45 minutes, some an hour and a half. Yet in order to avoid a scheduling nightmare, I was forced to be with each client for exactly an hour. This meant that some sessions would end with a 5-minute stretch to fill the time, whereas for others I would have to rush through the breaks to get the entire workout in.

Training should dictate business practices and not vice-versa. The only way to block your time and avoid a scheduling nightmare is to stick to the 1-hour session.

Also, I would get sick probably because I worked so much and wasn’t taking care of myself. Whenever that happened, I missed clients and didn’t get paid.

My one luxury was a hockey team that I played for once a week. One night I got tripped going into the corner to get the puck. I went down awkwardly and pulled a hammie. For five days, I couldn’t walk. And so for five days, I couldn’t train clients and didn’t make money.

Lastly, personal training is expensive. I know we’re worth it, but the reality is that personal training is very much a luxury. Whenever there’s a major downturn in the economy, spending $200+ a week on personal training is just not an option for most people. No amount of sales acumen can get around that fact.

You must learn to work smarter, not harder.

More than anything, what worried me was that my personal and professional life were in a downward spiral. I had no energy for friends, and when I did spend time with my family, I was so tired I couldn’t be the type of person I wanted to be. And a girlfriend? That was out of the question. When it did happen, I admit that I never had the energy to treat her as well as she deserved.

Personal training can be the best job in the world, but there’s a reason that the industry has a large turnover rate. Training clients one-on-one is rewarding, but not sustainable. Sooner or later, any successful trainer reaches the same point I did and must look into ways to work smarter, not harder.

There’s nothing wrong with working for a gym. In fact, I think most trainers should at least start working in one. But I think every skilled trainer should look into starting a personal training business online. If you do it right, all of the annoying problems I outlined earlier (1-hour sessions, time management, a huge expense, and the inability to scale your efforts) can all be solved. That, and you can earn more money as a personal trainer online than you can ever make in a gym. Here’s how to start an online personal training business the right way:

Systems are everything, including how to make $10,000+ extra a month.

I’m a “systems” sort of guy, and while some of my systems are below, there’s a lot more to operating a strong online training business that meets the eye.

A lot of people who approach me for individual coaching are already running an online personal training program haphazardly. They’re frustrated because they can’t find clients, and the continual churn of writing programs and email maintenance is time-consuming. Training people online isn’t leveraging your time appropriately if you don’t take advantage of the software and develop systems to do all the heavy lifting for you.

These people aren’t working smarter; they’re just working harder but now it’s online.

If you’re going to be an online personal trainer, do it right. If you’re looking at how to become a personal trainer online, there are two ways to do it:

  1. Take on a small-ish number of clients (10-20) at $100+/month. This is at least an extra $1,000 each month (and $100/month is a low price.)
  2. Take a step back from training in-person and commit more time. You can take on 100+ clients at $100 each month, or $10,000+ each month!

I know what you’re thinking: “I can’t handle 20 more clients in my limited time” or “100+ clients a month? How could I possibly get that many people and manage that many programs?

With the following steps and software, I’ll show you how you can do it. Build your systems and learn to leverage the best software available and each client should take about 20 minutes a month of your time.

How to be an online personal trainer – A Quick Start

The below is a very superficial overview of what it takes to become an online trainer. It’s not perfect. I know this because I wrote the textbook on online training (literally). Still, the below steps are good enough and it’s probably more important for you to get going right now with some forward momentum then getting everything right. For now good enough is just that, good enough.

  • Software is important, but not imperative. You can still use them, but the days of Excel spreadsheets are over. Good software automates almost every aspect of your business. I’m an unabashed fan of Trainerize (and have since become an advisor). If you want to give the program a try, use this link and you’ll also get a free Ebook from me on getting your first few clients.
  • Gather an exercise library. A software program like Trainerize has a built in video library or you can build your own. Ideally you’ll film 10-15s demonstrations of all exercises in your programs. For now, it’s good enough to do some sleuth work on YouTube and gather video demonstrations by others of your exercises to send to clients.
  • Decide on your client type. Pick no more than three types of clients that you want to include in your online personal training program. The only way to truly scale your program is to template workouts, which means you need people with similar goals and issues. For example, 25-30 males looking for muscle, 40-50-year-old post-pregnant females, or 18-25-year-old male college students.
  • Write 3-4 phases of programming for each client type.  Each client in the same category will receive a similar template with a couple individualized tweaks, based on his or her questionnaire answers. (For example, a client with shoulder pain might do an incline neutral grip dumbbell press instead of a bench press. They would still perform 4 sets of 8-10 reps at a 4010 tempo in phase one though.) Once you have a template for each client group you can individualize per client much easier based off of the information you gain from your intake.
  • Create an online application form. If you have a website you can build a form directly on it. If you don’t have a website, no worries, you can use a self-hosted form service. Google forms is great. So is Wufoo forms. On the form you should include:
    1. The basics: Name, age, gender, email address, Skype / phone number
    2. Rapport building: Favourite movie / comic / any random interest to bond on (people buy trainers, not training. Establishing rapport is just as important as any other type of marketing)
    3. Information gathering: Health history, training history, ever had a coach before?
    4. Flipping the script: Why do they want to train with you specifically (get them to prove themself to you. This is a powerful psychological trick that will increase conversions on your form and sales calls later on down the road.)
    5. Prequalifying: Are you willing to invest $200-$400 a month on your health and fitness goals? (make sure that money is an objection before wasting any of your time.
  • Decide on the best payment processing service. Paypal is easy and works great. It’s easy to implement, fees are reasonable, and you can deposit money directly into your bank account for free. If you want to use another service to accept credit cards online, you can. There are a lot of options, but I prefer Paypal.
  • Become the expert. The simple answer of how to get personal training clients is to make sure everybody knows that you’re a personal trainer. Once you set up your business, simply start posting workout tips on your Facebook, send an email to everybody you have ever met, and ask your parents to message their family and friends. Be sure to communicate the benefits of online training to your clients when reaching out to entice them. Here’s a list of a few of the benefits of online personal training to the client:
    1. They don’t have to go a gym (good if they are intimidated by the environment.)
    2. Scheduling is a non-issue (good for busy people who find it a nuisance to fight over the few convenient spots in a trainer’s schedule.)
    3. More cost effective (clients don’t have to pay the gym overhead so can get a better trainer at a fraction of the price.)

What’s the next step?

Online personal training is the way of the future.

You can still train people in your neighborhood, but also take on clients from all around the world. In fact, most trainers find that meshing in-person and online training works best by generating them the freedom they desire but still allowing a personal connection with some clients.

What I like most about an online fitness training business is that you can program whatever you think is best for the client without having to worry about details like time-constraints or the protocols of whatever facility you work for.

But, like everything else, systems are everything. You would tell your client that he or she needs a strong base first before getting into the fancy stuff, right? Well, your online training business is the same way. Build it right from the beginning, even on a very small scale, and the freedom you desire is closer than you may think.

5 Fitness Jobs You Can Pursue with a Certificate

Blog by: Suryakant Tripathi

Have you always been passionate about a career in fitness but uncertain of how you could pursue it?Whether you recently received a health-related degree, official certification, or you don’t see a future at your current job; taking the proactive next step is essential to planning your career in fitness. One of the most desirable things about a career in fitness is the endless amount of opportunities.

In this post, we will share five fitness jobs you can obtain with your certification:

1. Personal Training

Becoming a certified personal trainer can be one of the most inspirational and rewarding careers you can take with your certificate. As a personal trainer, you can guide your client through a fitness plan that is tailored to their goals and current physical health. With a career in personal training, trainers can pursue a few different opportunities. 1) group exercise programming, 2) one-on-one training or 3) virtual training.

A day-in-the-life typically revolves around improving client physical fitness through cardiovascular activity, weight training, balance activities and guidance for every day practice. According to CNN Money, a career in personal training is currently classified as one of the Best Jobs in America and can be easily obtained through a personal training certificate offered online or on location at an official exam center.

2. Group Fitness Instructor

A group fitness instructor is responsible for leading a group through various choreographed classes. They typically range from 30-90 minutes long and include: Pilates, BarSculpt, Cardio Barre, Zumba, Spinning and more. This job is perfect for an individual who is interested in guiding a group through the fundamentals of fitness. A fitness instructor is typically someone who is fit, healthy and energetic, as they will be leading a group through a class and expected to participate physically, not just guiding them verbally.

The instructor will typically spend their day-to-day teaching various classes throughout the day and are required to have a solid understanding of each movement, the health benefit of each exercise and the ability to stay conscious of each attendee as someone may have a health condition or become physically exhausted during an aerobic exercise. It’s your job to not only lead a class but to suggest someone to slow down if their health becomes a risk during a high-energy class.

3. Yoga Instructor

A yoga instructor is similar to a group fitness instructor because they typically teach a small-to-large group of students through a physical activity. The only difference is that yoga is more about focusing on posture, breathing exercises, meditation and balance activities. It’s more of a gentle, relaxing activity, versus group fitness classes that are typically more high-energy.

The instructor can opt for a variety of different class techniques, from Bikram to Vinyasa, there is variety and difficulty levels in every different style of yoga. An instructor will typically spend their day teaching various scheduled classes, leading their students through strength and balance activities and improving their flexibility and meditation abilities.

4. Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant

A career as a lifestyle and weight management consultant is often appealing to those interested in becoming more than a personal trainer. This is especially ideal for those looking to set themselves apart from other personal trainers. Since it’s such a competitive market for trainers, having extra credentials allows you to offer your client more, ultimately making your services more appealing.

With health and fitness it’s more than just putting time into physical activity, it’s making smart changes with your diet and your lifestyle. Most people who struggle with weight loss are experiencing difficulties because they haven’t made all the changes necessary in order to see their desired results. During a consultation, certified lifestyle and weight management consultants can determine the behavior of the client – are they accepting change or are they going to have difficulties making lifestyle changes. Consultants will also help their clients identify their biggest obstacles and help them create realistic, achievable goals.

This fitness job is typically a one-on-one and can help you expand your career. Since you can help just about anyone with a desire to change their lifestyle or improve their fitness, this fitness job is ideal to personal trainers looking for more opportunities.

5. Health & Wellness Coach

At this point you may be wondering what the difference is between a health and wellness coach and a lifestyle and weight management consultant. The main difference between the two is that a health and wellness coach typically guides their clients through making diet changes and information about health and diseases that their client may be at risk for based on their current health and fitness level/condition. Since a health and wellness coach mainly focuses on improving diet and physical health, this will exclude the the effect lifestyle choices have on our mind and bodies. Such as, routine, career choices, relationships, life choices, etc.

7 Things You Need to Know About Becoming a Personal Trainer

Blog by: Suryakant Tripathi

Before you get your first client, complete a fitness assessment, or help someone achieve a fitness goal, there are a few things you need to know about becoming a personal trainer.

It’s not just a gig where you help people lose weight and build muscle. You need to be able to do other important things to be a successful personal trainer, such as:

1. Attract Clients

You need to figure out how to get personal training clients. If you work in a gym, offer members a free fitness assessment, host a meet-and-greet event, or simply help people work out smarter and safer when you’re on the gym floor.

If you’re running your own personal training business, work online, or have an independent contractor agreement with a gym, you’ll need to step up your marketing efforts to find your own clients.

Online marketing, like creating a lead magnet, can help you connect with potential clients. Developing social media profiles on popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can help you build an audience of potential clients, too. And in-person networking can help you build your personal training business whether you work for a gym or on your own.

2. Understand Business Basics

If you’re on the payroll at a gym, taxes and insurance may already be taken care of. If you’re running your own business, talk to an accountant about how to handle taxes. And check out your options for liability insurance as a personal trainer.

3. Be Willing to Commit

Most personal trainers don’t wake up one day with a schedule booked with clients. It takes time to get clients, train them, and get results. The first couple of months can be hard. But if you stick with it, just one client who gets great results can be an excellent referral source to help you stay busy.

4. Choose a Part-time or Full-time Path

Being a personal trainer can be a full-time job. But it doesn’t have to be. Lots of successful trainers work part-time hours around school, family, another job, or other obligations. It’s a good idea to know what you want to do when you get started. But don’t worry, you can always change your mind later.

5. Be a Good Listener/Teacher

One of the best skills you can have as a personal trainer is being a good listener. When a client feels comfortable telling you about their health, fitness, diet, and other things in their life, you’ve got valuable information to help you create a customized training program to help them get results.

Of course, you have to do more than just listen. Trainers are also great teachers who can show a client how to squat safely, for example, and make smart decisions about nutrition.

But it doesn’t stop there. You’ll also need to be able to motivate and inspire clients to stay on track to achieve their goals. One way you can do this is by simply being a model for health and fitness by working out and eating right.

6. Expect Income Fluctuations

It’s one of the challenges of being a personal trainer. One week you might be fully booked with client sessions every hour. The next week, only half of your available hours are booked. And that means there can be income fluctuations from week to week or month to month. Create a plan to help you manage your finances.

7. Be Organized

There’s a lot more to keep track of as a personal trainer than just reps and sets. You’ll want to develop a system to organize and secure client information. Easy access to fitness assessments and progress reports will help you provide a better client experience. A paper-based filing system works, but more and more trainers are using online platforms and software to stay organized. And if you’re not already using a calendar to keep track of your training sessions, it’s time to start.
