APPROACH GOOD EATING HABITS

Kids-eating-veggies

By teaching your children healthy eating habits, and modelling these behaviors in yourself, you can help your children maintain a healthy weight and normal growth. The eating habits your children pick up when they are young will help them maintain a healthy lifestyle when they are adults.

Your child’s health care provider can evaluate your child’s weight and growth and let you know if your child needs to lose or gain weight or if any dietary changes need to be made. Some of the most important aspects of healthy eating are portion control and cutting down on how much fat and sugar your child eats or drinks.  Eat all the foods you enjoy but the key is to do it in smaller quantities. It’s easy to get sucked into the lure of the restaurant menu when you’re hungry and everything looks good.  Order what you’d like, but balance the meal out with the rest of the day. Make sure you’re also fitting in healthy fare like whole grains, fruit, veggies, and nuts and seeds in the other meals. It seems so ironic that so many products marketed for children are so essentially bad for them. So how do you, as a parent, oppose them when you think they are being unreasonable? There are few ways we can make it easier to break bread…

#Reinforce

NO means NO.  If child things the environment is negotiable, he will use it to his advantage. This may sound simplistic but it not. So just control and calm yourself when they are throwing tantrums in supermarket.

#Regulate

Home environment may be in your control but what happen when you go out on a party? Try and ban entry of foods inside your home, and loosen the reins. Moderation is key here, as long as your child eats his meals at home most of the time, he may be eating healthier than his peers.

#Reduce

Whatever you decide, just be an informed parent. Read food labels and listen to what is being said about ingredients like Trans fats and monosodium glutamate (MSG) because something should never be allowed either inside or outside the home. But this doesn’t have to sound as limiting as it does.

The world is full of beautiful, nourishing ingredients cooked in the way your children love. They are only waiting for you to discover them.
