Steroids or roids or juice or ped (performance enhancing drugs) they go under many names. During recent years, the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has received increased attention especially in INDIA.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are increasingly being used by athletes and youngsters to become masculine and to loose body fat.

When someone asks me about AAS, sometimes about the usage ,or either about side effects I try to keep calm and spends next 15- 20 minutes explaining or rather convincing them to stay away from it knowing deep down that eventually they will go to someone else and end up doing it. Now it’s not like AAS is as lethal as cyanide but the real trouble is that currently most AAS users are non-elite sportsmen who want to achieve a more muscular physique in a real short time.

Here are few reason why AAS have become trendy into Indian fitness world.

Alcohol and narcotic prevention research continues to develop and to improve, our knowledge of what distinguishes effective preventive methods or programs from less effective ones, AAS prevention is more or less a blank page at the moment.

Most exercisers look to their trainers or online coaches for leadership and guidance. We can find number of self acclaimed fitness experts preaching about “the safer way to use AAS”. It is important to show young people in particular, providing them with realistic objectives and expectations with their training goal

Availability and cheap prices are two prime reasons why AAS has become first preference for gym goers. If paying above MRP is not the problem then one can easily buy such product in medical over the counter.

Authentic supplements and protein powder are extremely expensive in India due to high import duty so to improve workout performance roids becomes first choice among gym goers.

The use of steroids by Bollywood actors has become highlighted in a number of newspaper and web articles where actors and models with previously very thin physiques have in a short period of time developed muscular bodies. Such transformations are impossible without AAS Some of this actors are youth icons and youngsters follow them and their method blindly.

It is important to understand that, Long-term consumption of AAS causes multiple physical and psychological morbidities. Research has also concluded that AAS have addictive potential and AAS abuse is commonly found with other substance abuse. Abuse of AAS is rare in eastern countries. Abuse among women is even rarer.

Here is a case report of an Indian woman, who was prescribed nandrolone decanoate injections by an unqualified medical practitioner to treat multiple non-specific somatic pains and reported weakness, leading to dependence for nandrolonedecanoate.

This case report supports the research finding of abuse potential of AAS, raises concern about the need for spreading the awareness about AAS abuse among medical professionals, regulating medical practice by unqualified practitioners, and strict legal check against AAS availability in developing countries.
